About the island

Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands in the southwest Caribbean just south of Belize and west of the mainland. Roatan is famous for some of the best SCUBA diving and snorkeling in the world. Its idyllic beaches and serene environment make it one of the most sought after Caribbean destination venues.

English-speaking Roatan enjoys direct flights from the North American mainland, and new direct routes from major cities around the world are being added every year by leading airlines. The island shows some of the most promising growth potentials in the Caribbean as evidenced by WSJ, Yahoo Travel, International Living and Islands Magazine; as well as the ever-increasing population of Canadian, American and European Residents.

Other important information

Although the official language in Honduras (and therefore also on Roatan) is Spanish, the authentic population of Roatan, due to its history of being a former British Colony, is still English speaking. In short, the population of the island is largely bilingual English- Spanish.

US Dollars are accepted everywhere on Roatan although the official currency is the Honduran Lempira. Currently, the exchange rate is 22,50 Lempira to $1.

Climate

Roatan boasts a tropical climate with moderate humidity that is tempered with steady ocean breezes blowing in from the Caribbean sea. The dry season is between March and the end of July providing continuous sunshine, with average temperatures between 29 and 30 degrees Celsius.  Roatan does have short rainy seasons, although they are punctuated with sunny days and weeks. The rainy days are often a pleasant relief to the usually warm weather. The rainy seasons are between July and September and January and February. Overall, Roatan has a warm and inviting climate, clear sunny days, steady ocean breezes and an average temperature of 27 degrees Celsius.

Roatan is located outside the normal hurricane path; because of this, property insurance is very low (around 1% of the reconstruction value). Although it is outside the normal path, hurricanes cannot be predicted all the time. Statistically, a hurricane has been close to, or over Roatan, once every 23 years.
